Imperfectly Good

All good people go to heaven, right? Not the case, but it is the case that we tend to buy into. We can strive to do good every day and some days it still won’t be enough.

Hold the door open, compliment someone, pay for someone’s meal. Be good. Do good. But what for? To feel better or to be a light for the opportunity to share Jesus. Because if you do good without Jesus, it is no good.

We are nothing without Jesus.

Luke 18:18-22 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No one is good – except God alone. You know the commandments.

I have kept this since I was a boy, he said. Jesus said to him, “you still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Do good, seek the good in people. But doing good doesn’t take us to heaven or even eternal life. Jesus called us to more. Just in the story in Luke, this man followed the 10 commandments of the Lord, but he lacked something.

Jesus is calling us to more than the lesser things of life. Lay down the fame, money, and the lesser things of the world.

Our ‘goodness,’ means nothing without Jesus.

Today, I want Jesus most. I want what Jesus wants. I want to lay down the lesser things of the world. Today I choose Jesus.
